Getting the Job Done

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and the Newcastle Labor team have delivered important projects across the City, while ensuring that Council is financially sustainable, protecting local jobs, and saving local services from cuts and privatisation.

  • Ward 4 - Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes has delivered flood mitigation works in Wallsend, main street upgrades in Beresfield, Wallsend & Shortland, and new footpaths in Elermore Vale and Maryland. 

  • Ward 3 - Cr Peta Winney-Baartz has delivered Blackbutt Reserve upgrades, new sporting projects, and footpath improvements in Jesmond, New Lambton and Waratah West.

  • Ward 2 - Cr Carol Duncan has delivered the Kotara & Merewether local centre upgrades, the first New Annual cultural festival, a new cycleway to the CBD, and Hamilton’s refreshed James St Plaza.

  • Ward 1 - Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen has delivered main street upgrades in Stockton and Carrington, new playgrounds in Mayfield, and affirmed our listing as a Refugee Welcome City.  

  • As Lord Mayor, Nuatali Nelmes has led the City’s advocacy to renew the CBD, funded the Art Gallery expansion, attracted major sporting events, and invested in renewable energy. She is working to restore the Newcastle Ocean Baths, upgrade Newcastle Airport, fix Stockton erosion, extend the light rail network, and support the diversification of the Port to create more jobs in our City.

15 new playgrounds built since 2017 - including at Hamilton North, Tarro, Rankin Park, Wallsend, Blackbutt Reserve, New Lambton, Mayfield, Mayfield West, and Tighes Hill.

100% Renewables

Since 1 January 2020, the City has been powered by 100% renewable energy - including due to the construction of the Summerhill 5MW Solar Farm.

Estimated job creation due to COVID Stimulus package

In response to the pandemic, Nuatali Nelmes delivered a targeted program with hardship measures for ratepayers, support for small businesses, assistance for local charities and families in need, and job-saving investment into local infrastructure projects that created 700 local jobs.
